Most of Newport Beach is within walking distance, a short ferry ride, or a quick drive from the front door. Here's how we'd spend a few days.
NEWPORT GUIDE
Right outside the door
The boardwalk runs right past the house, so mornings usually start the same way: coffee, a walk toward Balboa Pier, and a look at the water before the crowds show up. The pier itself is a few minutes on foot. Walk to the end and grab breakfast at the diner perched over the water, then head back along the sand.
The beach here is wide and easy. Bring a towel and a book, or rent a beach cruiser from one of the shops along the boardwalk and ride the flat path that follows the coast. It's the best way to cover ground and it's about as Newport as it gets.
On the harbor
The Balboa Fun Zone is a couple of blocks away on the bay side, and it's been there since 1936. The waterfront Ferris wheel is the main event, especially at sunset when the light comes off the harbor. There's an arcade, a few shops, and the frozen banana and Balboa Bar stands that the area is known for.
From the Fun Zone you can hop the Balboa Island Ferry, a five minute crossing on a little three-car boat that's been running for decades. It drops you on Balboa Island, where Marine Avenue is lined with shops and ice cream counters and you can walk the loop around the whole island in an afternoon.
If you want to get on the water yourself, you can rent a Duffy boat and captain your own slow lap around the harbor, book a whale watching trip, or catch the Catalina Flyer out to Catalina for a full day trip. The Fun Zone is the launch point for most of it.

The peninsula leans casual and seafood-forward, which suits the setting. A few we'd point you to:
Bear Flag Fish Company
A seafood market where you order at the counter and eat in flip flops. Known for the fish tacos and poke bowls. The kind of lunch that fits right into a beach day.

A relaxed dinner right on the water with the boats parked outside. Fresh fish, a raw bar, and a patio that is hard to beat at sunset.

A peninsula institution a block from the sand. Come for a cold drink, live music on weekends, and a crowd that is equal parts locals and visitors.
Worth the short drive
Crystal Cove State Park is about fifteen minutes down the coast and worth the trip. Wide soft sand, tide pools full of life, and the historic cottages on the beach. Breakfast at the Beachcomber, right on the sand, is a Newport rite of passage.
Fashion Island is five minutes inland when you want shopping, a movie, or a nicer dinner. More than 125 stores, plus the koi pond and fountains that make it more pleasant than a typical mall.
And if you're up for surf-watching, the Wedge sits at the end of the peninsula and draws some of the best bodysurfers and skimboarders in the world when the swell is right. You don't paddle out, you just watch from the sand.
